FAQ's

Here are just some of the questions that we are asked about our English courses. If you cannot find the information that you are looking for here, please contact us!

QWhere do your students come from and how old are they?
A

Our students come from all over the world and all walks of life, so the classes are a mix of all nationalities and ages. The average age is around 25-30 but we accept students from 18-60.

QCan I get a free trial lesson?
A

No, it´s not possible to get free trial lessons. Having students entering and leaving classes to see if they like them disrupts the class. This is not fair on the students who have already paid for a Course.

QDo I get free Internet access?
A

Yes! We free wifi with high speed Internet access if you have your own laptop or smartphone etc. We also have PC's in the Student Room

QHow close is the accommodation to the school?
A

We have an extensive network of host families throughout Dublin, which our Accommodation Officers have visited and approved. Many of our host families have been welsoming our students since we began in 2007 and are known for their warmth and hospitality. The majority of our families are located within 20-25 minutes of the school by foot , or are easily accessed by a short bus journey/ light rail journey.

DID YOU KNOW?
ELA is located right in the heart of Dublin City Centre

Accommodation is half board (bed, breakfast and evening meal). Prices start from €175 Euro per week per person sharing and there is an accommodation placement fee of €50 per person. Single supplement is an extra €50 per person per week. Should a student prefer to stay in a shared hostel, guesthouse or hotel or apartment, this can be arranged also.

QWhat is not included in the Course fees?
A

Course books are not included in the Course fees. We use the suite of books “New Cutting Edge” for General English and “Market Leader” for Business English classes. We also use a wide range supplementary materials from a range of other textbooks. We offer a material resources scheme for a fee which covers all books you will need during your course.

QCan I change level if I feel that the level is too easy or too difficult for me?
A

Yes. If a student has a level that is either lower or higher than the rest of the class, then the student can change the level subject to an interview with one of our Academic Mangers and a specific level test. The Academic will firstly liaise with your teacher to ascertain if you could benefit by moving up or down a level. It is always in the best interest of both students and the school that our students are placed in their corresponding level. To avoid problems it is important that you thoroughly complete the ELA placement test so that we can get the level right from the beginning.

QHow many different levels are available?
A

Classes range from Beginner to Advanced levels.

QHow are your classes conducted?
A

Our English Courses are “communicative”, which means that we teach a mixture of grammar, conversation, reading, writing and listening exercises, while also covering a range of practical and relevant topics such as current affairs, business, travel, accommodation, shopping, working, health, jobs vocabulary etc.

QAre the teachers native speakers and qualified?
A

Yes. All our teachers are native English speakers. They all have a university degree and at least 2 years of experience teaching English to students in Ireland. They are approved by ACELS/QQI. The College itself is accredited by QQI/ACELS (www.acels.ie) and recognised by the Irish Department of Education and Skills for the teaching of English as a Foreign Language.

QWhat makes ELA different from other Language schools in Dublin?
A

We are often asked this question. We can only say, that we have qualified and experienced native English-speaking TEFL teachers. We are situated in a great location in Dublin city centre, which is well served by public transport. We are 100% Irish owned and managed. Furthermore, we are members of Marketing English in Ireland (MEI) and through our membership all tuition fees are fully protected, so students are in safe hands with us.

QWhat if I get sick during my Course?
A

If you cannot attend classes because of illness, we cannot compensate you in any way. However you can contact the school to get information on what you have missed in class and try to keep up by studying at home. All visa students are required to attend at least 80% of their chosen Course. If you miss any classes because of illness you must present a Medical Certificate from a doctor to explain your absence.

QWhen can I start my Course?
A

Registration for English language courses takes place every Monday at 10am except during Christmas and New Year Holidays when the school is closed. On a Bank Holiday Monday registration takes place on Tuesday of that week. If you are a short term student ( 12 weeks or less), you are tested on the day of your arrival and you commence your course immediately. For long-term students, placement tests take place on Wednesdays by appointment only.
