Courses

English Language Academy (ELA) offers a broad range of courses that have been carefully designed and prepared to meet the general and particular needs of students who choose ELA to learn and enhance their English language skills.

All students are required to sit an external exam at the end of their course. Exam fees are not included in course fees.

Exam fees must be paid before the course starts. Please note that any students attending specific exam preparation classes i.e. IELTS, must book their respective exam, prior to joining the course, otherwise they are not allowed to join the class.

Classes are offered in the mornings from 9am -12.15pm and in the afternoons from 1.30pm -4.45pm (Monday to Friday).

All students undergo a placement test before starting classes so that we can diagnose your current proficiency in English.

All courses are tied to the CEFR. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) was put together by the Council of Europe as a way of standardising the levels of language exams in different regions. It is very widely used internationally, and all important exams are mapped to the CEFR.

Our courses are grouped under the following headings:

GENERAL ENGLISH / BUSINESS ENGLISH COURSES

The ELA General English / Business English combined courses are structured to provide a solid grounding and improvement in the core language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Course are offered in the morning and afternoon class periods, and are open to students from Beginner to Advanced level. Each week in class, you will be exposed to General English, Business English and Exam Preparation specific to your level. Regular class trips also play a role in immersing you into many aspects of Irish culture. All classes focus on a communicative approach to learning. Our courses run all year round and involve 15 hours of tuition per week. (Monday to Friday). Students can join any week for any period of time that they choose as each week’s lessons have a stand alone objective. New students can join on Mondays (except on Bank Holidays), when they can start on Tuesdays, as we operate a rolling enrolment model. Visa students must undergo an external examination such as TIE, Cambridge, PET, FCE, CAE or IELTS, depending on their level at completion of their course. We can guide and assist you through this process. Specific Business English Courses are available on request, provided that sufficient numbers sign up to the said course.

IELTSEXAM PREPARATION COURSES
Our IELTS Examination Preparation courses are specifically focused in preparing candidates to successfully complete the IELTS examination which take place throughout the year. Each week represents a stand-alone objective, so students can join classes for any length of time. However, we recommend that students study for at least 12 weeks prior to the IELTS examination. Every week, students undergo a practice IELTS examination in class. There is also the option of studying for 25 weeks. Students wishing to join the IELTS Preparation class must pre-book the IELTS exam, before they are allowed to join this class.

ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES COURSES

English for Specific Purposes classes aim to familiarise students with the English terminology currently in use in their particular disciplines. This option is attractive to international companies who wish to send their employees in groups to an English speaking country to improve their English language proficiency in their particular discipline. Firstly, our course designers will get an insight into the business culture of each particular profession and design a course around the student's needs. Students normally join the ELA General English classes in the mornings, and then study ESP classes in closed groups in the afternoons. The ESP classes can be customised to a specific profession on either a one-to-one or group basis in the afternoons and students can book for as many hours as they wish. The ESP classes can be specialised in the following areas:

  • Business English
  • Agriculture
  • Law
  • Medicine/ Health Care
  • Travel & Tourism
  • Call Centre/Customer Service
  • Aviation
  • Banking/Finance

Students can also choose to do a combination of General English in a group in the mornings, followed by afternoon classes customised to your specific profession. The minimum level of English required for ESP is Intermediate. We will accept small groups of no less than 7 at any one time for any one ESP subject.

PRIVATE 1-1 ENGLISH LESSONS
Taking private lessons allows students to benefit from flexible English tuition tailored to their individual requirements. Lessons can follow a structured format or can be arranged to concentrate on a particular area of the student’s choice.

MEDICAL ENGLISH LESSONS

Medical English courses combine working in a small group of a maximum of 8 students in the mornings to develop general English speaking and listening skills with 1-to-1 Medical English classes in the afternoons. The 1-to-1 Medical English lessons will focus on your individual needs, taking into account your specific line of work. Medical English courses are suitable for doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, students of medicine and other professionals working in the medical sector.

What to expect:

  • improve general and social English language skills and your pronunciation
  • enhance your communication skills for dealing with English-speaking patients and colleagues
  • raise awareness of intercultural issues and ‘international English’
  • develop specific vocabulary and expressions for English used in the medical sector
  • Practise presentations in English or taking a patient history, if necessary
  • work on writing medical reports, emails or case studies

Please note that if you are an international student on a student visa programme (eight month visa), you are required under immigration rules, to undergo an external proficiency exam at the end of your course, subject to your specific level. The exam fees are not included in the course fees. We can help and assist you with the process of booking your exam.
